A Brief Look: Hellboy Board Game by Mantic Games

One of the most iconic modern day characters is Hellboy. From his amazing series by his creator, Mike Mignola, to the two films directed by Guillermo Del Toro and an additional one coming soon, Hellboy has continuously grew in popularity and sustained his base. From the amazing art and writing from Mike Mignola and other artists, Hellboy was destined to go beyond the graphic novels. For such an awesome series, it was destined for someone to make a game simply about Big Red and the adventures of the BPRD.

Mantic Games have created over a dozen successful Kickstarters in the past and with their experience with creating table top games, most people in the hobby . Since they have shown success in the past, Mike Mignola and Dark Horse Comics allowed Mantic to create Hellboy: The Board Game.

The base game is £69.99 (which, at the time of this article is equal to $94.73) and comes with:

Below are images of the different parts of the game and some of the expansions that come with it when you partake in the Kickstarter. Based on the impressions of their previous game, The Walking Dead: All Out War , the miniatures are created with a good quality plastic. Per one of the stretch goals, each tile piece and card tokens is made with a 2.5mm thick board with a linen finish. So much is going into the game and due to so many people investing into the game (currently over 10,000 backers), Mantic continues to add more stretch goals to help add more people to the fold.

When looking at the stuff that comes with the base game, you can see how the price is reasonable, especially when compared to similar games in the genre. What makes backing the Kickstarter more appealing is the additional add-ons and stretch goals:

Final Thoughts...For Now...

This is going to be my first foray into table top gaming. Looking at the inital preview play of the game, I became less worried about the complexity of the game and now very excited about playing the game. Mantic games was nice enough to allow potential players access to a beta version of the rule book so you can gather a better understanding of how to play the game. I'm more worried about trying to paint the 100+ miniatures that are coming with the game.

The expected launch window is currently February 2019, which should allow Mantic enough time to complete the game and manufacture it. Don't take too long to make your decision.
